Introduction

This year I decided to participate in the Ludum Dare 44 Compo, that took place Friday, April 26th to Sunday, the 28th, for 48 hours. I didn’t start until after my Calculus 1 final I had on Saturday at 10 am which I passed 🙂 ! Ludum Dare Compo requires that everything be made from scratch, except for the engine and tools, which I used Unity and Photoshop for. It was refreshing to be put back into making my own game from scratch, I haven’t been making art from scratch for a long time, usually I just do corrections on models in Maya, or textures/sprites in Photoshop. The last Ludum Dare Compo I participated in was LD 32. Here’s a link to all the games I’ve submitted to Ludum Dare before the update to their website, and here’s the link to the new site. The theme this year was, ‘Your Life is Currency’. Before this I was reading articles about the crunch that developers are facing at Epic and Rockstar and thought it might be a good idea to make a story game to shed light on some of the issues that devs are facing at these companies. Story action games are my favorite genre as you may have noticed with the types of projects I make. I couldn’t elevate the action too much besides making intractable objects in the environment and the ending in the game.

Spoiler – The Story

The story is about an office worker who wakes up in his corporate sponsored room and has to get up to go to work. After leaving your room you pass by other people’s rooms and have time to finally think about life. Once you get to work you have to go to your desk and work. After a few seconds of working the time will change to night and you go back home for the night. After you go to sleep in your bed the time resets to day time and you have to go and repeat the process until the story comes to a conclusion. All throughout the game cameras are following you, even in your room. The story begins with you questioning the difference you’ve made in life then its revealed your mother has died and you were unable to be there for her last moment and can’t go to the funeral because you don’t have any days off. Then its revealed that your father can’t afford the house and you can’t afford to help him pay for it. You go through your last day at work stressed about the money  and on your way home you’ve given up completely. You’re no longer allowed to sleep on your last night and once you touch the night stand it opens up, revealing a revolver where you take your life.

Conclusion

This was probably my best game jam product and it taught me so much about story development both from a programming stand point and a writing stand point. I’ve been trying to perfect a story system for the games I’ve created and the solution I made here was based off my game, Cave Brawlers, and the Multiplier and worked great. I think I have a solid solution that I will keep iterating upon on future titles. Play the game here!
